Is Earth's Water Older Than Sun? #earth #sun #water #solarsystem #discovery #science

Recent Studies showed Earth’s water is older than the sun. Scientists have been studying a protostar called V883 Orion, which is located about 1305 light-years from Earth. This protostar is surrounded by an interstellar medium, which is basically a cloud of gas and dust.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The ratio of hydrogen to deuterium in this interstellar medium is higher the solar system. Deuterium is a heavy hydrogen isotope that was formed during the Big Bang. And since it’s heavier than regular hydrogen, it tends to stick around in space longer.

Water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. And since hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, it’s likely that the water on Earth was formed from hydrogen atoms that were floating around in space billions of years ago.

But since deuterium sticks around longer than regular hydrogen, it’s possible that some of the water on Earth contains deuterium atoms that are older than the sun itself.
