The concept of the photon was developed in the early 20th century by scientists like Max Planck and Albert Einstein. After studying the warm glow of heated metal, Planck suggested that electromagnetic energy could only be emitted or absorbed in fixed amounts/quantities and gave the smallest quantity of it the term quantum. Planck proposed that the energy(E) of this smallest fixed amount(quantum) was equal to a constant multiplied by the frequency(ν-nu) of the radiation and that is where we get Planck’s constant h = 6.626 x10^-34 Joules-s.
Einstein expanded on this idea, showing how light could be thought of as comprising particles or packets and coined the term photons for this light. This is most evident with the photoelectric effect in which you shine light on a metal surface and electrons are emitted. For this discovery, Einstein was awarded the nobel prize for physics in 1921.
