In 2012, scientists in Japan discovered a remarkable type of bacteria called Ideonella sakaiensis. This bacterium has the incredible ability to consume polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the plastic commonly used in bottles. Using two unique enzymes, it breaks down the plastic into its basic building blocks and completely degrades it within a few weeks. However, the speed at which this bacterium works is much slower than our production rate of new plastic.
