The large pyramids in Egypt are one of the greatest wonders of our world. They were built in ancient times 4500 years ago. The pyramids were built as tombs for their kings called pharaohs. The pharaohs were buried as mummies carefully wrapped and preserved in strips of linen. These pyramids have secret tunnels and hidden chambers inside them and their walls are carved with ancient writing called hieroglyphs.
One interesting thing about the pyramids is that they originally had a smooth white covering on the outside made of a rock called limestone. This limestone covering made them shine brightly in the sun. Today most of that limestone has worn away.
